One World Films: THE BOYS FROM BAGHDAD HIGH (Oct. 11/12)

(From Annette Mayer)

Just wanted to give you all a "heads-up" on a special film showing that One World Films will be sponsoring on Sat. nite, Oct 11 and Sunday afternoon, Oct l2 in celebration of the Central Ky. Council for Peace & Justice's 25TH anniversary. CKCPJ has designated 20 days in October for events to mark their anniversary, , and as we now are among their supporting organizations ,we thought we'd show a film (original thought, huh?).We will be showing the documentary, THE BOYS FROM BAGHDAD HIGH, (I just received permission from the director to show it... As always, we will not charge for the film showings. Sat. nite show will be at 7:00 in the theatre in the Library, and Sunday afternoon showings will be at 2:00 and again at 4:30 p.m ., also in the Library. I know there is a UK home football game that Sat., but the Athletic dept. is so sure that it will be "picked-up" on TV that as of now they cannot tell me the time for the game...afternoon or evening...so I've decided not to get anymore gray hairs and have scheduled the Sat. nite for 7:00 , and I'm sure there are 140 people in Lex. who won't be going to the game (Myself included) if it turns out to be a night game.Anyway, BOYS FROM BAGHDAD HIGH premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and is the story of four high school seniors who were given basic instruction in film-making and then given a digitalcamera to record their senior year in high school. One boy is a Christian, another a Kurd, another a Shiite, and the fourth, a Sunni. The school is in a middle-class, religiously mixed district, and the boys have been raised by parents who saw themselves as Iraqis first and only secondary as members of a particular religion. We (OWF) are going to try our darnest to get high school seniors to see this film...it is very interesting..and maybe they won't complain about getting up in the morning, riding the school bus to school, and not having to worry about stepping on a mine or being shot on the way to school, or not having electricity to study at night. This e-mail is mainly to alert you to this film showing, and I'll keep you posted on it as if some plans do work out, we'll have some additions to the event. But, please, save the evening, or that Sunday afternoon.Hope you all are having a good summer. Stay cool.

Annette
