In the Fray: Gay Marriage, Straight Marriage, and Other Issues in Coupling

INTHEFRAY.COM TAKES A LOOK AT GAY MARRIAGE, STRAIGHT MARRIAGE, AND OTHER ISSUES IN COUPLING

Cambridge, Mass. (April 5, 2004) INTHEFRAY.COM, an online magazine devoted to issues of identity and community, is publishing a special issue this month, "Love in a time of conflict," devoted to some of the most controversial social issues of our time: the rise of gay marriages, the decline in straight marriages, and other recent cultural shifts that are changing how and whom we love.

In the April issue (In the Fray), Henry Belanger talks with experts about President Bush's efforts to promote healthy marriages in lower-income communities; Adam Lovingood photographs San Francisco same-sex couples who were married in city hall last February; Radhika Sharma interviews second-generation Indian American couples who are trying to make arranged marriages work in modern America; and Laura Nathan explores the ways that a dating industry hungry for profits furthers certain stereotypes and assumptions about gender and sexuality.

Love in a time of conflict also features personal stories from our readers about the complications and joys of their "cross-cultural relationships" (take, for instance, "Metro and manure," a self-described country girl's account of loving across the rural/urban divide). We round out this special issue with Kathrin Spirk's touching photographs of a couple who have been together for more than fifty years.

This month, INTHEFRAY.COM also introduces three important columnists to its pages: New York Times Magazine regular contributor and Alicia Patterson fellow Benoit Denizet-Lewis, veteran journalist and author Afi-Odelia E. Scruggs, and editorial cartoonist Tak Toyoshima, creator of the Secret Asian Man strip. Most of the pieces for the special issue will be published on Monday, April 5; the Belanger and Lovingood articles will appear in a second installment on Monday, April 19.

Since its April 2001 launch, INTHEFRAY.COM has published 28 issues and featured more than 90 writers and artists, including Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Robert F. Keeler and controversial political commentator Noam Chomsky. It has covered topics ranging from multiracial churches to gay
body fetishes to school choice to Hindu-Muslim violence. Yet, it continues to operate on a shoestring budget without an office, with all communication done over e-mail and phone (many editors have never met face-to-face), and an all-volunteer staff of some 200 editors and contributors.
