Larry McCaffery: 100 Greatest Novels, A Second Opinion

Larry McCaffery was a provocative and unique literary critic at San Diego State University and he made this list up in response to the Modern Library list of esential books that reflected the established literary canon. He was unique in that he recognized the importance of genre/underground works and put them into play with more established classics and experimental works. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a conference at Kent State University on "pla(y)giarism" and he was a very generous scholar, very willing to share his expertise, to help those starting out, and to learn from his younger colleagues--we could use more scholars like him. Best of all he did not carry the pretentious self-importance (insecurities) that plagues many English/literary departments:
