"Education will be a major issue in this fall's election. President Bush's marquee program, No Child Left Behind, has widely been criticized for imposing unrealistic standards on states and cities and the failing to provide adequate funds. Beyond this immediate issue lies the larger challenge of rescuing the ideal of the common school so that, well, so that no child is left behind. That project requires a national commitment of adequate resources and inventive strategies, beginning with investments in very young children who are currently not part of the education system at all."
