Kentucky Legislature Puts Anti-Gay Measure on November Ballot

(courtesy of Melissa Purdue)

Well, after many months of struggle, at 11 last night, the KY legislature voted to put on the November ballot an anti-gay marriage amendment to the KY Constitution that also precludes civil commitments in the state. The bill passed 85-11. We can now look forward to an intense public effort on the part of the religious right to get out the anti-gay vote in Kentucky.

In a similar amendment vote in Colorado a few years ago that was eventually struck down by the US Supreme Court, the hate generated by the campaign for the amendment led to a 100-150% increase in hate crimes against gay/lesbian residents.
