Brooklyn Gentrification: The Art Show!
Gothamist
The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA) is unveiling a new exhibit this week called "The Gentrification of Brooklyn: The Pink Elephant Speaks." Curated by Dexter Wimberly, the show will open on the 4th and runs through May 16th.
Wimberly, a Fort Greene resident, told the Brooklyn Paper, “Now is a good time for this show. Brooklyn is becoming so homogenized. As a curator, it was important to me to make sure this exhibition was not just an African-American perspective, or a white perspective or an Asian perspective or a Latino perspective. It was important to try to involve artists that were representative of all these ethnicities.”
In addition to the 20 artists involved, there will also be works from two local high schools (The Brooklyn Community Arts and Media High School and The Secondary School for Research)—where students have been documenting the impact of gentrification on their neighborhoods for years through words and photos. And beyond the visual stimulation, there also will be a series of public programs to compliment the exhibit.
