In a well-organized essay of 2-3 pages (typed, double-spaced, one inch margins) answer the questions below. There is no need for a title page. Do not place your paper in a folder. Please simply fasten the pages with a staple. Papers sent by email will not be accepted. The assignment is due in class on Monday February 22. Papers not handed in on the 22nd will be assessed a late charge of one letter grade for each class day beyond the due date.
What are the major differences between Generation 1 and Generation 2 in modern warfare? Especially focus on the efforts by political leaders in making war palatable to the, as Michael Howard described them, people whose “opinions mattered to them.” Maintaining support for war may be especially difficult for the leaders of the conventional (more powerful, established) side in a Generation 3 struggle. Why is that? (It is assumed you will make clear what is meant by Generation 3 and how it differs from Generation 2. Also, you should make reference to the three assigned readings in the Barash book)
