Wanted to invite everyone to a very informal film screening/listening party at Mecca this Sunday night (May 8th) at 7pm. This film is "Down to the Crux", Michael Lucio Sternbach's documentary exploring the relationship between the civil rights movement and free jazz. The film really helps illuminate the environment within which this music developed. It features interviews with Archie Shepp, Bill Dixon, Raphe Malik, William Parker, and Marshall Allen (of the Sun Ra Arkestra) and performance footage from Peter Brotzmann's Die Like A Dog Quartet. The film is a little over an hour long. Afterwards, we'll hang out a while, enjoy good company, and listen to the Tentet?s most recent records on Chicago's Okka Disk label. (If you haven't gotten a copy of the free sampler cd for the show, I'll have a bunch of those on hand too.) Hope you can make it out.
I also wanted to let you know that if you head to Alfalfa restaurant on the night of the Tentet show (next Wed/May 11) and flash your tickets, they'll give you 10% off your entire ticket.
