(Gibney's three documentaries are all favorites and his latest Gonzo is one of my favorite films this year. I will be showing the Oscar-winning documentary Taxi to the Dark Side tomorrow in my film class and later this semster in a Peace Studies course. Enron should be required viewing for every American citizen as our economy implodes!)
Alex Gibney -- Gonzo
The Treatment (KCRW: Santa Monica)
Host: Elvis Mitchell
2008 has been quite a year for director Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room). Two documentaries he was involved with were nominated for Oscars, and his film, Taxi to the Dark Side, won. His new doc, Gonzo, takes us into the heart and soul of Hunter S. Thompson. Hear what drives him to seeking other points of view.
Gibney discusses the recurring themes in his documentaries, The Great Gatsby's influence on Thompson, the advent of Gonzo journalism, similarities between the political climate of today and the 1970's, and his friendship with artist Ralph Steadman.
